April 14, 12:00-1:00 PM - Resilience: Making Yourself and Your Organization Stronger
Leading
Strategist Gary Hamel (Harvard Business Review-Sept 2003) said
that resilience is "...ultimate competitive advantage in
the age of turbulence - when organizations are being challenged
to change more profoundly, and more rapidly, than ever before."
Being a nonprofit leader has never been easy but the demands are
even greater now due to the speed of change, the challenge of
the economy and required leadership skills. This session will
focus on attributes that heighten both personal and organizational
resilience including identification of examples from our own organizations
to make this learning more concrete.

3 Ways to Tell If Your Organization is Ready for Planned Giving
This presentation
will begin by illustrating why it's important to offer donors
deferred giving options and then show leaders how to develop a
Planned Giving Program without trepidation. You don't need to
be a lawyer. If you can understand the characteristics of a few
simple giving vehicles, you can have a successful Planned Giving
Program. This session will provide a tour of bequests and other
giving options that are easy to understand and describe, demonstrating
the best ways to promote and implement them.

Strengthen Funding Strategy through Measurement and Evaluation
Within today's current economic climate,
demands are increasing for nonprofits and other entities to demonstrate
accountability in compelling and meaningful ways. Neglecting measurement
and program evaluation can impact both recognition and reputation
of nonprofit organizations within the public's eyes, which may
ultimately result in funding reductions and threats to sustainability.
This presentation will explore how implementing measurement and
program evaluation will enable your organization to meet increasing
funder demands and continue strategic movement during the economic
downturn.

Training at Foundation office: Creating Partnerships that Deliver
Results (VANNO). Lunch served!
This session
would identify common barriers to effective nonprofit collaborations
and provide tools for overcoming them. It would include a checklist
of issues to address in preparation for planning a partnership.
It would also provide suggestions on dealing with these difficult
issues: sharing control over management, developing an exit strategy
for dissatisfied partners, or partners with whom others are dissatisfied,
and balancing competitive or adverse interests of partners. The
emphasis would be on applying tools used by successful business
collaborations to nonprofit issues.

Board Governance Made Easy
Most nonprofit
boards know they are responsible for board governance (overseeing
the purpose, plans and policies of the organization) and have
a sense of what that means. However, many Executive Directors
just aren't sure how to support that essential board function.
This session will help Executive Directors (1) understand board
governance, and (2) communicate more effectively with their boards
to ensure good board governance.

It's All About the Relationships
Seldom has it been more difficult to attract
and retain donors than it is right now. So it's more important
than ever to identify those persons who have both the ability
and inclination to support your cause generously and then nurture
relationships that will lead them to increase rather than abandon
their giving. This session will begin by demonstrating how to
identify those donors whose giving will truly make a difference.
Then it will show leaders how to engage their boards and volunteers
in developing and strengthening long-term giving relationships.

Resolving Conflict to Lead Change
At the heart of leadership is change; it is
challenging the status quo with the intention of positively
changing your organization. Anytime the process of change is
undertaken, conflict inevitably occurs. The way in which organizations
respond to this conflict will determine the success of change
initiatives. This session will discuss how leaders can effectively
facilitate the conflicts that arise in evolving organizations.

Nurses phone calls help patients lower blood pressure in study
As Congress weighs options for cutting some of the $2.2 trillion Americans spend on doctors, surgeries, treatments and drugs, some solutions may be as simple as a phone call.
A team of Duke University Medical Center doctors and nurses has found they can help lower patients' blood pressure with a do-it-yourself monitoring plan and bi-monthly phone calls from a nurse.
